Hi Ron
Do you know if James had a brother called Hugh?My g-g grandfather Hugh Macwaters married Margaret McCracken and their eldest child William was born about 1822.This could put Hugh's date of birth in the same time frame as your James.
It's interesting that James and Hugh both had sons named William.Given the patterns of naming first born sons after their paternal grandfather, it's possible that we have a connection. It's also interesting that your James had a son named Hugh which doesn't seem to have been a very common name.
In the 1891 census, William's place of birth was shown as Ireland. He was living in Edinburgh, Scotland at the time.William seems to have been quite the character with four wives and at least one additional lady on the side.
Please let me know if you have any additional information.
Thanks
Brenda Mackintosh
