From McVeety to McVittie???
My GG Grandfather is James McVittie (1838-1907) who was married to Jane Askwith (1845-1911).Their daughter, my great grandmother, is Louisa Jane McVittie Longmire (1869-1924).James and Louisa were born in Canada, Jane was born in England.James and Jane are buried in Yelm, WA and Louisa is buried in Wenas, WA.
I've been told by family in Tacoma that James McVittie's parents are Simon McVittie & Alice Best.I've read during my searches where Simon changed the spelling of his surname from McVeety to McVittie and this fact has been documented in a book, "The McVeetys and the McVitties in Ontario 1820-1980," compiled by David Stager.I've also seen the 1851 ON census with a surname McVeety but, the given names with their ages fit.
Now I've found this book in a library in Toronto but being in Idaho, it's not a short walk down the street. But I am trying to get my hands on a copy of this book.
In the mean time, does anyone have a good understanding of the information that shows Simon is James's father?Knowing how jealous people are of their surname, I find it interesting that Simon would have changed it.
Your assistance on this is appreciated.
