COLLIDING CARS.A terrible wreck on the Q. and a loss of three lives…PATRICK READY was also an Irishman by birth, and had lived in this city 22 years, an employee of the railroad company during nearly all that time.He was about 65 years of age, and a wife and two sons, lads of 15 and 17, survive him.Like the comrade who died with him, MR. READY had many warm friends here.He was a soldier in the Union army, a member of Company C, 12th New York Infantry, and was disabled in the service.Both men had acquired nice homes and leave their families in comfortable circumstances.

JOHN F. READY, county attorney of Jefferson County; born here 14 Nov. 1872.His parents, PATRICK and MARY (COLLINS) READY, were both natives of Milltown, County Clare Ireland.The mother came to the U. S. in 1861 when about 20 years of age.MR. READY having made the trip several years before.He was in the regiment that was enroute for the front and which MRS. READY saw as it marched near the dock.He had enlisted, 51st N. Y. Inf. And served until honorably discharged on account of disability, his elbow having been shot off …He met and married MISS MARY COLLINS, wedding celebrated in Syracuse, New York.Arrived in Fairfield in 1866 or 1867.Three children:MORRIS, who was burned to death when two years of age; JOHN F.; and W. J. at home with his mother.
MR. JOHN F. READY married, 21 July 1909, MISS. ELIZABETH HAYDEN, native of Creston, Iowa, daughter of MICHAEL and MARGARET HAYDEN.They have one child, MARY MARGARET.

JOHN *ROONEY, whose parents live near Whitfield, was killed by the cars near Mt. Pleasant last Wednesday.His foot caught in the frog at the switch.He died in a short time.He was an excellent young man, about twenty years old.His parents have the deep sympathy of the community in their affliction.The young man was buried here Thursday forenoon, services being held at the Catholic church.

JOHN RONAN, a resident of Jefferson County for 17 years past, died at his home in Whitfield on the 6th ult., after six months’ illness from malarial fever.Deceased was born in County Galway, Ireland, his age was 48 years and he had been in this country 30 years.He leaves a wife and seven children, the eldest of which is 20.Remains interred in this city.

We failed to notice at the time the death of an excellent citizen of Whitfield, that of MR. JOHN P. RONAN, which occurred on the 6th day of January….He was 48 years old, having been born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1838.In 1862 he was married in the state of New York to the loving companion who still survives him, and in 1869 they removed to this county, where they have since lived.About four years ago he moved to Whitfield.Since then MRS. RONAN has been sorely afflicted, losing her eldest son, a most excellent young man, by an accident on the railroad at Mt. Pleasant some two years ago, and now has her husband taken from her.Seven children remain, four boys and three girls, the oldest of the children a son about twenty years old.The funeral occurred on Friday, January 8th.

AN OLD TIME BURLINGTON EMPLOYEE.JAMES HAYES, who died at Glendale the 1st inst., was an old time employee of the C. B. & Q. Railway company.He came here with the construction of the B. & K. railroad in 1858, and had resided here uninterruptedly since that time.He was for more than a third of a century section foreman at Glendale.He was a good man and citizen, honest in his dealings with his fellow men and faithful to his employers in every trust.MR. HAYES was a native of Ireland and was about seventy years of age.Five children survive him—MATTHEW, CATHERINE and ANNA at home, JOHN, a railway conductor in Utah, and WILLIAM, a station agent in Colorado.Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church, this city, the 4th inst. by REV. H. J. HOGAN.

FELL FROM A TRAIN.ALBERT MONROE, a brakeman on a C. B. & Q. freight train, fell from a car Tuesday morning of last week near Lucas and was instantly killed.MONROE was about 27 years of age and formerly resided in this city.He married a daughter of WILLIAM DESPAIN, who, with two or three children, survives him.The remains were brought to this city for interment and the funeral took place Thursday afternoon.DR. MAGILL conducted the services.A number of fellow employees assisted in performing the last sad rites for their comrade.

MRS. RATCLIFF DIES IN FLORIDA.MRS. BRUCE RATCLIFF, former well known resident of Fairfield and mother of GLENN L. PEEBLER, Fairfield, passed away Sunday at Dania, Fla., where she had made her home the past few years.The body is being returned to Fairfield and will arrive at the Raymond funeral home Thursday.Last rites will be held Friday at 2 p. m. at the funeral home with the REV. EDWARD ESLER officiating.Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.The rites will include OES services.
MARGARET DAVIS RATCLIFF, 90, was born March 13, 1872, on a farm 4 ½ miles north of Fairfield.She was the daughter of ELLIOTT and MARY LINN DAVIS.She was reared and educated in Jefferson County, and spent practically all of her life in this community until moving to Florida.
She was married March 3, 1891, at Libertyville to JOHN W. PEEBLER.In 1920 she was married to BRUCE RATCLIFF at Fairfield.MRS. RATCLIFF was a member of the Lutheran church.Survivors include one son, GLENN L. PEEBLER, Fairfield; one daughter, MRS. NELLE M. DOTY, Dania, Fla.; two grandsons and four great-grandsons.She had made her home with her daughter at Dania the past few years.MRS. RATCLIFF was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, four brothers and two sisters.

PEEBLERS MOVE TO IOWA CITY.RICHARD PEEBLER came from Iowa City Friday evening to join his wife and two children, RHONDA and MIKE, who have been visiting his parents, MR. and MRS. GLENN PEEBLER, 404 South Third.
The RICHARD PEEBLERS have sold their home in Des Moines where he was associated with Drake University, and are moving to Iowa City.They will live in a motel until their new home is completed.PEEBLER is assistant dean of the College of Business Administration at SUI while he is completing work on his Ph. D.

His appointment was announced Wednesday by DR. GEORGE C. HUFF, vice-president of academic administration.
PEEBLER served on the Drake faculty from 1956 to 1964.He is returning after one year as assistant dean of the college of business administration at the University of Iowa.
PEEBLER is the son of MR. and MRS. GLENN L. PEEBLER, 404 S. Third.He is married and the father of two children.
