Neil McRae to South Africa 1870
Posted by: John McRae (ID *****4219) Date: November 25, 2008 at 23:28:40

My great grandfather Alexander McRae emigrated to New Zealand about 1870. He died prior to the birth of my grandfather and as a consequence very little information about his origins has been passed on to the subsequent generations. The only information I have is that he had a brother Neil whom, it was believed, went to South Africa at the same time as Alexander came to NZ. Alexander was married in March 1873 and his age at that time was shown as 26 on the marriage certificate, which would mean a birth date in 1846/1847. There is no official record of his death in NZ and the marriage certificate has no details of his family and origins. The notice of intention to marry says he was from Invernesshire. His son (my grandfather) was named Alexander John Neil. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has information on a Neil McRae born in the 1840s possibly with South African connections.
