my grandfather, peter joseph, hailed from carrick macross. he emigrated to boston after the famine, I think. My mom has a genealogy that is in english for about 100 yr and the rest in gaelic - goes quite far back. I will check some details but as you mention, this is a very small county and our relatives (that we are still in contact with in dublin) still own the family homestead there - but being so close to northern ireland, have not kept it active at all.
he did have a brother that came to the US too but died quite young - I think his name was Hugh. I'm fairly sure that was the only close relative that left Ireland from his immediate family at that time and know he had a fairly large family (what a surprise!) neither he or his brother ventured beyond new england as far as we know.
PJ - as he was called, married Margaret O'Neill whose family was already settled in Lawrence Massachusetts. Both families were upper middle class and managed quite well during the depression in USA.
I'm not sure if this helps but will post more detail when I obtain it - plase keep me posted of your findings. Carrick Macross is still a small town in a wee county - so can't imagine that there is no connection.
Good luck in your search and Merry Christmas!
