William McAfee Sr. (or McDuffee) and Margaret “Martha” Taggart
of (near Dalton, Wayne Co., Ohio)
The father of William McAfee Sr. b. abt.1777 (Scotland/or C. Antrim, Ireland) d. Dec. 1858 near Dalton,
Wayne Co., Ohio, is John McAfee (McDuffee) born about 1740 (estimated) in Scotland (probably Isle of Islay) died
probably between 1815 to 1835. Note: McAfee and McDuffee are interchangeable surnames in both Scotland and
Co. Antrim, N. Ireland.
The family apparently used both surnames. McAfee/McDuffee(s) and McQuigg/McCuaigs are found on the Isle
of Islay 12 miles north of Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland thus the likely origin of John McAfee (or McDuffee). They
were Presbyterian, Scots-Covenanters and farmers. The McAfee family left Ballymagarry, Dunluce Parish, Co.
Antrim, Ireland (their home) for near Dalton, Ohio in 1838.
They took the ship “St. Andrew” and arrived in New York City, New York on June 7th, 1838. William McAfee’s
Daughter, Sarah (McAfee) McQuigg and husband, John McQuigg, took the ship “New York” and arrived in New York
City, NY in July of 1843. They moved to near Wooster, Wayne Co, Ohio.
Their son, James C. McQuigg, left the following biography which identifies William McAfee’s father as John
McAfee (or McDuffee). There are two John McDuffees buried in old Dunluce Cemetery in Dunluce Parish, Co.
Antrim, Ireland. Perhaps one of these is William McAfee’s father. And perhaps the other John, a brother. There
is a Mathew McDuffee also buried there that was married to Sarah Rankin. William McAfee sold his land in
Ballymagarry to a Hugh Rankin possibly related to Sarah Rankin. Mathew McDuffee may have been a brother to
William McAfee (or McDuffee). I am the great, great, great grandson of William McAfee Sr.
My lineage is the following:
John McAfee (or McDuffee) & unknown wife to
William McAfee Sr. (Or McDuffee) & Margaret “Martha” Taggart to
Mathew McAfee & Margaret McElhinney to
Mathew Porter McAfee d. 1915 in Hannibal, MO. & Eliza Belle Garner (Eliza born in Palmyra, MO.) to
Charles Thomas Mahlon McAfee & Lillian Belle (Crawford) McAfee Shores to
Jerry Ray McAfee & Mary Evelyn Glascock to
Jerry Arnold “Jay” McAfee
Sarah McAfee McQuigg & husband, John McQuigg of Wooster, Ohio, were the grandparents of Brigadier General
John Rea McQuigg of East Cleveland, Ohio. General McQuigg was three term mayor of East Cleveland, OH, and the
1925 National Commander of the American Legion. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, OH.
