I made a mistake in transcribing John McQuaig Sr's letter: He states,"He emigrated ca 1785 from Islay to Cumberland County NC.....". I picked up the last "he" which was Angus, but I think he means the son, Alexander.
This is from the 1830 Walton County, Fla. census, Page 76 (another different spelling):
Duncan McQUAGG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0- 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0
Norman McQUAGG 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0- 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
