McBRIDE, RANSOM. "Some Emigrants from North Britain to Richmond County, N.C., 1782-1790." In North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, vol. 20:2 (May 1994), pp. 118-119.

Finally got this from NCGS. This reference is a list of "persons who took an oath that they were prevented from voting for Duncan McFARLAND in an election in said county where alligations of impropriety were raised."

The only thing that helps us with our research is this statement, ".....Forsook their native soil of Great Britain (North Britain or Scotland) & from the year 1782 Until 1790 Emigrated into this State......." This tells us pretty definately that Duncan McQuage came to this country between 1782 and 1790. This most probably means that he did not come here as a prisoner (since after the Revolution, prisoners were sent to Australia) so the "King's Deer" story may have been just a family legend or may have been embellished from the involvement of other family members.

There are 16 "Duncans" on the list. Duncan McQuage is No. 59. Two John Morisons, a Murdock, a Norman and a Malcom Morison (No.58) are also listed. Malcom Morrison's relative Allen Morrison owned land directly southeast of the McQuagge's homestead in the Euchee Valley and John P. Morrison was the one who got the homestead from the McQuagge heirs for some money owed. They were most probably the same Morrisons or their descendents.
