Ken. sorry it wasn't more help for you--they might be some of your family members. I have found families in this time period were highly likely to name children after uncles, aunts, siblings, and themselves. I am having equally as much trouble with the spelling of the name--my GGGGrandfather George came from Ireland spelling it McFerren, the 1820 census spelled it McFerren in Ohio, then in 1830 it was McFerron also Ohio, then he moved his remaining family to Illinois after his wife died and it became McPherren. Meanwhile one of his daughters, Sarah married an entirely different James McPheron also from Ireland, but emigrated later. Meanwhile, back in Indiana, my GGGrandfather James, George's son is spelling his name McFerren on the 1840-1850 census. He moved to Illinois after his wife died and he remarried and then began spelling it McPherren. It might be the census taker's idea-but it certainly can be confusing--it has helped me to follow whole family groups. Good luck, Barbara
