Hi Therese,

One side note before I answer your questions. My paternal g-g-grandmother was M. Elvira McClain (b. 1818) from North Carolina. She moved to Georgia and married Solomon David Leonard. Any relation?

I believe your question regarding John McNutt (b. 1829), maybe the same John McNutt I found on the 1850 census. My John was born abt 1828 (given his age of 22 in 1850) and he was living with James O. McNutt (b. 1818, OH) and Catherine (born 1823, NJ) and their children: Ruth (1842, OH), David (1845, OH), Emily (1846, OH) and Jeptha (male, 1849, OH).

I'm not sure who these two McNutt men are, but there were living 8 households away from Francis P. McNutt on the Carroll Twp., Ottawa Co. census of 1850. (Francis P. & Catherine would be old enough to have a son born in 1818, however, on the 1830 census they only have two sons listed, 1 under 5 and 1 5-10. I've accounted for Calvin (born 1825) as the 5-10 boy and George (1830) as the under 5 boy. (If George is not enumerated on the 1830 census, and Calvin is the under 5 boy, there is one other boy in this family, age 5-10; however, he would be too young to be James O. and too old to be John.)

On the 1840 census Francis P. & Catherine have 3 boys: 2 under 5, 1 5-10 and 2 10-15. Calvin (1825) would now be the 10-15; George 10-15; One boy aged 5-10 (I don't know his name and I assume he died before 1850, because there is no son listed in 1850 as born between the years of 1830-35 unless this is George)--now, if the 5-10 boy is George, that leaves one son 10-15 to be accounted for and he was not listed on the 1830 census; Henry and Levi as the under 5 boys.

Where did your John (1829) live in 1860 in relation to the other McNutt's? I haven't found him, but wasn't actively looking yet, either. (I'm a full-time student and work about 30 hours a week, too. So my genealogy is limited right now.)

I don't have any mention of Caroline or her children. There are 2 males aged 20-30 on the 1840 census for John (1773) & Susannah (1781) McNutt. I don't know if these are brothers to Francis P.(1799), Calvin (1805) & John (1807) or relatives or hired hands. IF they are McNutts, one of them may be the husband of Caroline, as the age would fit--she having been born about 1819 and assuming HE was a near her age.)

I don't know about the other McNutt's you mention. I saw the 1820 census for Alexander (Seneca Twp., Sandusky Co.) and copied it down for future reference. He would be the right age to be a brother to John (1773), but I haven't found any ties to definitively say so.

There is still more digging to do on this line, but I don't have time to do much for the next several months. Please keep me in mind and check with me after May (I'll be graduating and will have more free time.)

Best of luck!

Jill
