I can assure you that the name was not changed. It was McNish when the McNishes & McCormicks landed in Rhode Island and continued the family stone carving business, before going out to farm in the corn belt in Logan County, Illinois. My great grandfather, Robert McCormick knew Abraham Lincoln and always stayed at the Palmer House in Chicago, when he was there, which was not a very Scottish practice. My great grandparents would bring dresses and dress material back from the windy city for my mother and her sister, Maggie. Later in life, Mother said thatMaggie got the nice dresses, while she got the material. But Aunt Maggie always claimed that the material was priceless and the dresses were ordinary. They really loved each other dearly, and I adored them both.
