James McNichols from Ireland

My gggrandfather was James McNichols, born in Ireland and came to the US
about 1848.
Based on census and death certificate, could have been born anywhere
from 1810 to 1820 (or some other timeframe, given that range!!) He
married Elizabeth Ricketts in 1853 in Rockingham, NC. She was from
Pittsylvania County, VA and that's where he was listed on the 1850
census and where they lived the remainder of their lives. He served in
the reserves during the Civil War (probably too old to do anything
else). I have never looked for records on whether he requested
citizenship or not (but that Civil War service would probably have made
it difficult!!)

I believe James was born about 16 miles from Belfast
and left home at about 16. Had four brothers Robert (contractor in
Philadelphia), Henry (constable in Nyack, NY), unknown who migrated to
Colorado, and unknown who settled in Norfolk, VA and operated a drug
store. (My great-uncle's son says "info about brothers is unreliable
as this is what my dad had heard, but no one confirms.")

James and Elizabeth had one son, William Barney McNichols b. 1854 who
married Sallie Ellen Jones in 1875.

Is there a connection to your McNichols? Thank you for any help!!
