Although most of your questions were answered well, I did not see any reference to the family crest. From what I have been able to determine, there are 2 coat of arms most often associated with the McNicholas clan, their own and that of the "Burke's". As was noted in one of the follow ups, the McNicholas name comes from Nicholas de Burgh, a descendant of William de Burgh, the successor to Strongbow after the Norman invasion. As such, the Burke family crest and coat of arms is also that of the McNicholas clan. At some time, however, another coat of arms was created by the descendants of Nicholas, and it is this coat of arms that is often now associated with the McNicholas name.
