Dear Elvalee,
Here's some more goodies especially the end.

"Died, in this county on Sunday last, very suddenly, HECTOR McNEILL (Doctor) aged about 65 years. He was an excellent mechanic, and a very respectable citizen."

(from the Raleigh Register via the kindness of Carolyn Gibbons at Cumberland Co. genealogy website)

As you can see there isn't a whole lot of info to go on.
Then the obit for my Hector:

Obituary Raleigh Register Nov 11 1839 McNeill, Hector Senr. “At his residence on Upper Little River, in this County, on the 11th ultimo, Mr. Hector McNeill, Sen. In the 85th year of his age. He was many years a member of the Presbyterian Church and hope that he is now a member of the blood-washed throng in the happy regions above. (Signed) Cummunicated."

So...both were in Cumberland Co. at the time of their deaths. One is a Dr. and the other is referenced as Senior (Planter comes from his will). Senior's residence is Upper Little River, ...

and then as so often happens when you try to defend a thesis you have an epiphany.

OK, follow carefully..

Dr. Hectors estate accounting lists among other things "The hire of Negro Solomon & the support and clothing of negro Dinah for the year 1842..."

and (drum roll please) from James McNeill (Jimmie of Rockfish Creek) in his will "& a Negro Boy named Solomon during her life, and after her Death the said Negro Boy Solomon shall be left to my Son Hector," also "I likewise give to my Son Hector a Negro Boy named Laurry & Negro Girl Dinah..."

so I'd say we can pretty well lay to rest who Dr. Hector is and was.

Now, who is Planter/Senior Hector of Upper Little River about 85 years old, that died 11 Nov 1839. He was born approx. 1754. He had sons Neill, Hector, Turquill and daughters Mary, Sarah, Jennet, Margaret, Ann Cameron, Flora McNair, Elizabeth McFadyen/McFayden and an illegitimate daughter Margaret (the two Margarets may be the same person, but one is referenced "my loving daughter" and the other is just "my illegitimate daughter").

I believe the keys are his sons being named Neill (could this be for his father?), Hector (for himself?), and Turquill (maybe for a brother?). Of course that scenario means his wife's family names were never used. Although there is room between Neill's birth-1788 and the next one Mary -1792. So, Neill would be his father, Unknown would be her father, then Hector for himself, and Turquill would be her brother? not sure what the child naming formula says do you?

Well gotta go. Let me know what you think.
Debbie
