Hello - In response to your message I was wondering if you were able to find out if the two McNaughton families you mentioned are brothers (Rev. Peter and Donald)?
I believe its a tradition to name the first born son after the grandfather. That being said it could be assumed that Rev. Peter's father was Peter and Donald's father was Archibald.I believe that these two individuals may fit into my family. Donald as Archibald's son (b 1785 in Islay Scotland) and the Rev. Peter as Archibald's nephew (his brother's son?).
I believe that Archibald McNaughton (of Islay) may have come to Canada in 1820-1825 and settled in Caledon Township. The town Belfountain was originally nicknamed Tubtown due to a large tub he had advertising his business as a cooper (barrel maker) in town, it was then called McCurdys Village and eventually Belfountain.Archibald and his wife are buried in Melville Cemetery in Belfountain. There is a website you can check out and read about the area.He was a cooper by trade but also very religious because he was instrumental in the Presbyterian Church being built there and served as an elder. One of Archibalds son's Duncan also became a minister. However another notation from a book about Belfountain (Caves, Castles and Quarries in the Hills of Caledon) stated the Cooper's name as Peter McNaughton. However, I believe that it may be possible that Peter took over his fathers business when his father died in 1834. Archibald also had a son Duncan (b. 1826) who became a presbyterian minister in 1868 and served in North Keppel Township, Grey County, Ontario (North of Owen Sound).
Here is the info from my family:
Archibald McNaughton b. 1785 of Islay, Scotland d. 1834 Belfountain (Caledon), Ontario married Elizabeth Henry b. 1785 Scotland d. 1854 Belfountain, Ontario. They are both buried in Melville Cemetery, Belfountain
Their Children (although I a certain there must be more):
Elizabeth b. 1808 Lochwinnoch, Scotland married William McDonald moved to USA
Rev. Duncan b. 1826 Caledon Twp,d. 1899 North Keppel Twp
Dr. Henry b. 1828 Caledon d. 1896 Erin.He had his medical practice in Erin.
It is also possible that there were two other sons named Archibald and Peter but I have not been able to locate any information or find them on a census.
Rev. Duncan married 1st Mary ? 2nd marriage in 1863 to Rebecca Jane Hardy (b. 1839 Trafalgar, Ont d. 1925 Temiskaming District, Ontario)
They had the following children:
Archibald George b. 1864 Kingsville, Ont
Dr. John Duncan b.1866 Kingsville,Ont d. 1921 Temiskaming
Hardy Stuart b. 1869 ? North Keppel Twp (Kemble) d. 1877 Kemble (Big Bay Cemetery)Ontario
Charles Henry Bueton b. 1874 Kemble, Ont d. 1961 Temiskaming
Quintis F. b. 1877 ? Kemble, d. 1880 Aylwin, Quebec
Mary E. b. 1882 Aylwin (?) d. 1882 Aylwin, Quebec
They also adopted a child Isabelle Luxmore in about 1883 after returning to North Keppel Township, Grey County, Ontario.Isabella was born in 1877 on Manitoulin Island, Ontario.
Dr. Henry McNaughton - married 1st Isabella McKinnon (1840-1880) and 2nd Jane Ann Robinson Masalles. She was a widow.Masalles was her married name.
I look forward to hearing from you to see if there is any connection.
Regards,
Laurie Lotz
