Don, I found what we are looking for. William's will. Good conjecture.
McKnatt, William. Will Made Nov 14, 1775. Mispillion Hd. Heirs: wife Mary; sons Richard, William and Joseph. Daus. Ruth, Sarah, Mary, Jean, Cathorin, Ann & Rachel; Major Macknatt, son of Richard. Exec'rs, wife Mary and William MacKnatt. Wits., Samuel Graham, Solomon Griffith, Rachel Graham.
Prob. Oct. 23, 1776, Arch. Vol. Aee, pages 23-24, Reg. Of Wills, Liber I., folio 183.
Notice Major McNatt, Richards son. Also, the Scots tended to follow a set rule when naming their children:
Sons: 1st son named after father's father
2nd son named after mother's father
3rd son named after father
So....Richard would have been the second son since Mary Underwoods father was named Richard.
William would have been the 3rd son since he was named after his father.
Joseph therefore was the first son and that makes William Macknatt
s father's name to be Joseph McKnatt. What do you think?
