Ms. Smylie,
I apologize for being such a latecomer to this conversation, but I believe that I have a connection to the Smylies and McNairs.
I live in Tattnall County, Georgia, which adjoins Liberty County, and I believe that I may be connected to the Smylies you mentioned in this post.My great-grandmother was Julia Smiley Rogers (her Find a Grave ID # is 57611922 if you'd like to take a look at her family connections), born in the community of Smiley in Liberty County. My great-great-great-great-grandfather was Archibald Smiley (occasionally spelled Smylie), born in November 1806.I believe that this may be the same Archibald Smylie you mentioned. His place of birth is not known but is likely Liberty or Tattnall County. He lived most of his life in Liberty County, and we have reason to believe that he died in Savannah in 1839.
None of the Georgia Smileys have been able to determine who Archibald's father was, though I suspect his father was James Smylie (Find a Grave # 60952585), who died April 29, 1878 at the age of one hundred. He was supposedly born in North Carolina and moved to Tattnall County with his family at an early age.He served in the War of 1812.
In another post in this thread, someone mentioned that Neil Smylie, who married Sarah McNair, may have had two sons, John and James, by a previous marriage.Do you suppose that this son, James, is the same James that died in 1878 here in Georgia?
Any information you (or any others who happen to read this post) can contribute will be greatly appreciated, as I am grasping at straws at this point.
Thanks,
Dylan Edward Mulligan
