James McMurrough Armagh to Galveston TX 1875

I am writing to see if I can gather more information as I work on family history. I also want to get in touch with Paula Osborne, a cousin who is also working on this. I recently discovered that her e-mail address has changed since we last corresponded.

I am also writing to say that I visited Armagh in County Armagh where my grandfather, Patrick Joseph McMurrough, was born and baptized. I found his name and that of a brother, James, and a sister, Katherine in the cathedral baptismal records. They were the children of James McMurrough (spelled McMurraugh and McMurragh in the records)and Margaret Henry/ Hendry (both spellings in the record. I found something which may be a valuable link to further information. The baptismal sponsors of the three children were members of the Muldoon family: Grace Muldoon in two cases and ??? Muldoon (name not readable) in the third. James McMurrough senior's mother was Peggy Muldoon. She married ??? McMurrough but I do not know where or when. It appears that it was through the Muldoons that the McMurroughs came to Armagh.

I was told at Armagh's Irish Studies Library and a Catholic library that McMurrough was not a name which was common in the county of Armagh, that it would be more commonly found in counties Wexford and Wicklow. This is the first I had heard this. The family story was always that the McMurroughs were from Armagh nd they were. There were Muldoons who owned or leased land in Armagh and they were in land records but I do not know which Muldoons were linked by marriage to the McMurroughs. I would appreciate any help tracking this strand.

I also went to Belfast to do work in the Public Records Office and did so. I also placed an order for a search of birth records for Patrick Joseph McMurrough when I was in Belfast as I could not search myself, needing to make a reservation a month in advance. I did not know this when I went to Belfast. I am waiting for the results of the search. If it is successful, I will then order a birth certificate or a record of the birth--however it is done there.

While in Armagh I spoke with an archivist at the Catholic library and he said he had a friend in Glasgow where James McMurrough and Margaret Henry/Hendry were married. He offered to get in touch with her and see if she could find a record of that marriage. They were in Glasgow when their first child who died in infancy was born.

I would like to find our who James McMurrough's father was, the man who married Peggy Muldoon. I would like to find out where James and Margaret sailed from when they left for the United States. They entered the country through the port of Galveston, TX, and settled north of Houston, south of a small town called Plantersville. They came to the United States in 1875.

I have been pecking away at family history in fits and starts but now that I am retired I plan to focus more energy and time on it. I would appreciate responses from any and all who might be able to help me trace my family.
