Richard, Thank you fopr the assistance. I have gained some knowledge of Ballard since my original posting. Because Ballard was a Union supporter, Ballard was dragged from his home in WV by the Rebels and put into prison until his death. This information was included in a pension claim dated 8/10/1866. After Ballard's death, Nancy moved to Illinois and most of their children later moved to Iowa. Ballard Mountain, WV is named after this man. Several websites show that Ballard is buried in Abingdon, Illinois - this is not likely. Ballard died in prison in WV, then his widow moved to Illinois. The reason for this confusion is that a memorial to Ballard was placed in the cemetery in Illinois even though he is not buried there. The Greenbrier Genealogical Society lists a Ballard McMillion cemetery in Renick, Greenbrier, where reportedly a headstone for Ballard was found. This cemetery is in a remote area - one person said they spent 4 hours getting to and from the cemetery and it was so overrun that they never found the headstone. My wife is a McMillion and we just returned from the McMillion Family Reunion at the McMillion Methodist Church in Friars Hill, WV just north of Lewisburg, WV. It is a combination reunion and fundraiser for the church in order to keep the cemetery maintained. There are 600 buried there. Is the individual you are helping aware of this annual reunion and of all the information available in the cemetery? Are you close to the area? I am interested in which brother to Ballard you are researching. I have 24,000 people in my file and would like to trade information. Art Buser Madison, Ohio Notify Administrator about this message?
