I am trying to find details concerning Rev. William McMillan, who in the October 1850 enumeration of the June 1850 census of Benton County, Arkansas is listed as: McMillan, William, 39, M, Clergyman C. P., TN. -----, Mary E., 20, F, TN (2nd wife Mary Emily Hastings). -----, Manerva J., 17, F, AR. -----, Edward H. or N., 13, M, AR. -----, Mary A., F, 8, AR. -----, William B., 6, M, AR (prob. died young). -----, James B., 1/12, M, AR (1st child by Mary "Emily"). Presumably, "Clergyman C. P." denotes Cumberland Presbyterian. This man was twice married. Mary E., age 20, in this census listing was second wife, Mary "Emily" Hastings, daughter of the Benton County, AR pioneer settler Henry C. Hastings and wife Mary D. Word. Her stated age of 20 in 1850 is historically correct as they married in 1848 when Emily was only 18 and Rev. McMillian apparently 37 years old. The next four persons listed were Rev. McMillan's older children by an unknown 1st wife, the baby James B. being the first child by 2nd wife Emily Hastings. In the errant, probably deliberate, 1860 Benton County, AR census of Mary Emily (Hastings) McMillan's father's household, the enumerator listed the household members in descending age order, thus hiding Emily and her four McMillan children (James B. 1850, Samantha 1852, Mary Alice 1853, and William H. 1857) under different surnames in her father's household. The two youngest of the four McMillian children survived into adulthood. Emily (Hastings) McMillan married as her 2nd husband James Riddle of Benton County, AR in August 1860 but both died before 1870. A researcher in 2006, who I have been unable to contact, claimed that Rev. William McMillan had a life span of 1811 to 1885. If this is true, Rev. McMillan and Emily Hastings must have divorced before August 1860. But, I cannot find a reference to him in the prior 1840 AR census or anywhere in the subsequent 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, or of his elder children that may have gone with him. This same query has been emailed to the Cumberland Presbyerian Historial Foundation in Memphis, TN, but the on-line database of ministers since 1810 does not reference this man. Can anyone help me?
