I descend from Andrew Parks, John C. Parks' brother. I have that John was the father of Jacob. All of the information I have seen from other researchers has the first four children of Jacob and Nancy were born before they married. I don't know if that means Jacob was the father or another person. I was given the first wife of Rufus as Martha C. Cress, married December 29, 1860 in Grayson Co., Virginia. I have not confirmed this but I can check when I go to the court house again. What I am confused about is the fact that I have a copy of a divorce between Jacob and Nancy, September 27, 1855. Do you know if they remarried or what? I find them together in the census up until 1880 and Jacob is living with his sister, Susan Cole.
I have only been able to find Johnathan Rufus McMeans in the ALLEGHANY, NC, PINEY CRK TWP,1910 census. He is listed with his wife, Nancy E. Parks, age 67, married 45 years having had 15 children with 10 still living. It shows this to be his second marriage while this was her first. If they had been married 45 years that means they were married in 1864. Do you have any idea what happened to Martha? Only three children are listed; Etta age 18, Roy age 16, and another male child age 14 but I cannot read the name.
If you will go to this web page: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/graysoncem/potatocrkcem.htm, this is a listing for the Potato Creek Cemetery and J. R. McMeans is listed. I was wondering if possibly Rufus started using the McMeans name when his mother and Jacob divorced.
If you would like I can scan and send you the copy of the divorce. If there is anything you could share with me on this family or family line I would appreciate it. I would love a complete list of the children. If you would like anything else I have I am more than willing to share. I have been researching the Parks family for about 4 years and don't mind sharing anything I have. I have several marriage licenses and some pictures.
Anything would be greatly appreciated,
