Hello Michael, Your right it does sound like we are related. I have found that reference to John (b 1774) and "unknown Hamilton". This comes from a source in Florida and I believe it to be untrue. My ancesters were a John (Ian) McMartin who married a Katherine Robertson in 1798 emigrated to Bay of Chaleur and then on to St. Andrew's East in Quebec. I have several silver spoons of their's with the monogram of I and K McMartin. The story in our family is that there has been a Katherine in every generation named for this woman. I have a list of their 15 children and will pass it on to you but at the moment it is at home and I am at work.
I have the church record from Perthshire showing a John McMartin of Killian and a Katherine Robertson of Weem getting married in 1798. John's parents were a Duncan McMartin and Janet Gillespie (I have also seen her listed as Janet McGregor)They moved from Callendar Scotland to Killin Scotland which is over a small mountain from Glenlyon.
I went to this area last year and it is absolutely beautiful, however, no McMartin's stilll live ther according to the Post Mistress who checked her delivery route for me. Another party I have corresponded with is also a McMartin who has relatives tracked back to Killin. We are trying to find the link to match his records to mine. I'll look in the material I have compiled and see if I can find your g-g-g grandfather.
