McMANN, MCMAHAN, and MCMAHON might be separate families, but I have seen my lines spelled all three ways, including the way they were written on tombstones. It depends on how is is pronounced to a census taker or others, as to how it was written. One of the first things a good genealogist learns it to write a name in every way they can think of to and then start their research.
