Hi McMahons! I have no connection to your family but I do have an old book on Modern Oratory published in 1906 with the name F.J. McMahon printed on the inside flyleaf. The figure of a lion [perhaps the McMahon coat-of-arms?] is stamped twice. There is also a genealogy headed "The first to leave Ireland." I'm not sure who that may be.

The genealogy is this:

Ireland. Father's side.
Dunn/McMahon [no first names] 1804. Their son Peter McMahon married Kate Bracken daughter of Bracken/Garrity [no first names].

The Mother's side.
Peter and Kate's son Charles married Elizabeth Hickey, the daughter of Jeremiah Hickey and Ann Sheridan. Jeremiah was the son of John Hickey and Honora Sullivan. John was the son of Hickey/Honora [no last name]. The date 1850 is written there. Ann Sheridan was the daughter of Michael Sheridan and Sarah McCormack. Michael was the son of A.Kerrigan and J. Sheridan. Sarah was the daughter of Oliver McCormack and Katherine Lahey.

A line drawn from the McCormack's had Flaherty, Cratty, and Leo Rabette, who are probably other relatives.

Charles McMahon and Elizabeth Hickey were the parents of Francis McMahon and Katherine McMahon. Question marks follow both names. The genealogy ends here. Perhaps Francis was the F.J. who owned this book.

Some notes:

"Peter McMahon was married twice. No children by first wife. Her name Jane Hill. Sister to Charly Hill whose daughter Alice Hill married G.V. Higgins, M.D."

"Ann Kerrigan at her birth was nearly killed by the English soldiers of King George. In Ireland the soldiers terrorized the countryside and inhabitants fled leaving their homes to the mercy of the soldiers. One day Ann Kerrigans mother fled leaving her child in bed. Soldiers thrust bayonets thru beds to kill everybody that lived there. She escaped the soldiers thrust and was found asleep by her mother when she returned."

[There were several King Georges to whom this may refer:
George II 1727-60; III 1760-1820; IV 1820-30. I think it probably was III].

"James Sheridan cousin to Gen. Philip Sheridan's father visited Bridget Sheridan who married O'Brien in N.Y. city when they first came to this country. Bridget was James Sheridan's sister. Bridget O'Brien had a son named John O'Brien who afterwards became known as Capt. Dynamtie Johnny O'Brien."

[You can google Capt. Johnny and find that he worked for the Alask Steamship Company at the end of the 19th-beginning of the 20th century].

I hope this will ring some bells with someone out there.
