,Dear Jim:: I was very interested to hear of another McMahon whose family lore suggests a distant connection to Marshall McMahon. I have a very similar situation . As I understand it,the G/G/Grandfather of the Marshall who was Patrick MacMahon of Torradile Co.Limerick was born in 1684 shortly before his father fled to France so related families, perhaps cousins, might have remained in Limerick?
.Patrick MacMahon returned briefly to Ireland in 1707 to marry Margaret OSullivan of Bantry.but he settled in France wheras his brother Murragh moved to Portugal where he became Knight of Alcante.Patrick and Margaret had three sons,.Their third son Jean Baptiste presented proof of his descent from Irish nobility to the King.He married Charlotte de Berlin in 1750.She was the daughter of a wealthy Burgundy landowner and had inherited most of the family property to the chagrin of her sisters who challenged the MacMahon ancestry in court but lost.
Jean Baptiste and Charlotte had two sons,Charles and Maurice Francis..Maurice Francis married Mlle.deCaramen and they had 17 children. Their youngest son Maurice Patrice born in 1808 went to the St.Cyr Military Academy and rose through the ranks. In 1875 at the age of 65 as Marshall MacMahon he was made President of France. He died in 1893 at the age of 85
TheMarshall McMahon family had connections to Cork.Through his wife Marshall MacMahon had inherited property which included a house at Ardoginna near Ardmore. His son Compt.Emmanuel MacMahon frequently lived there.A second Cork connection was through Thomas St.Austin MacMahon who was appointed French Consul in Cork and lived at Frescati near Blackrock about 1800.-1820. He was said to be a cousin of Terence MacMahon of Newcastle County Limerick who died in Toulouse in 1817. This brings a link closer to Shanagolden.
I have failed to yet locate a copy of a Family History written fairly recently by a grandson? of the Marshall. Can you { or anyone else } fill in any of the gaps or identify cousins of the original Patrick.Corrections would be welcome if I have made any mistakes.
Best wishes [email protected]
