Just a note on your thought about Mac?Mc in the MacLeods. It does not mean much and families have it spelled bith ways. My grandfather was John Roderick McLeod and he was the son of Neil MacLeod. He had sibling with Mac and siblings with Mc. It sometimes was a result of census takers and government transcribers as a good deal of the family just spoke gaelic and accepted spelling as given to them or in my family case where brothers quarreled and changed names to differentiate themselves.
