Hello, I am hoping that someone has access to census records for the State of Maine, and for that matter, when the territory still belonged to Massachusetts. My grandfather, John McLennan, was born in Ft Fairfield, Maine, May 8th, 1853. He was the son of James and Jane McLennan of Maine. Jane was the former Jane Findlay, of Maine. Her father was Douglas Findlay from Aberdeen. Both James and Jane were born in Maine. They eventually had four sons, (unknown order- but James, John, George, David) I know the family moved to Portland, Maine at an unknown time, but my grandfather remembered them clearing out a wooded area and building a cabin, just on the outskirts of Portland. My grandfather went to sea at the age of 11 in 1864, and carved on his sea chest is his hometown of Portland, Maine! Because he went to sea at such an early age, the above information is all that he remembers of them...so I know nothing of them and what happened to them. Perhaps a check with the 1860 Portland census, and subsequent census years of 1870-1880-1890...might reveal what happened to the family members and where they spent their lives. The only other thing my grandfather remembered was that his father, James, was a cousin to Big Rory McLennan, the hammer thrower, and that James' father, Donald McLennan, came over from Inverness, Scotland. Of course, going the other way with the census, might lead to clues or actually revealing where the McLennan family lived prior to coming to Portland, and where possibly his parents may have been raised in Maine. Any help would surely be appreciated. Thanks regards, bruce mclellan Notify Administrator about this message?
