Hello My name Is Pieter Lenting. I have adopted a grave at the American Cemetry in Margraten in the Netherlands. The grave belongs to Jay D McLendon jr. Mr McLendon was a soldier in the 85th Cavalry Recon Squadron of the 5th Armored Division. I already found some information about Mr McLendon but I'm searching for more. I tried several genealogy websites but cant come any further, maybe you can help me. My ultimate goal is contact with relatives and a photo. What I can tell you about Mr McLendon is the folowing; Name: Jay D McLendon jr. Date of birth: ? - ? - 1910 Place of birth: North Carolina Army serial number:34242243 Place of enlistment: Camp Blanding Florida. Date of enlistment: 06-03-1942 Civilian occupation: truck driver. Marital status: single without dependents. Date of death: 12-15-1944 What I also found was that he had a brother: Claude T McLendon, born on 05-08-1908 who married Myrtis Rudd who was born on 05-06-1911. According the Federal Census of 1930, both Jay jr and Claude lived in the house of Mr Berne Swing at Mount Pleasant, Gadsden County, Florida. At the time Mr McLendon died he had the rank of a TEC 5. Mr Mclendon died on 15 December 1944. That morning, around 11.30 his squadron launched an attack into the town of Bergheim in Western Germany. In the woods surounding Bergheim was alot of enemy resistance, with heavilly mortar fire. The surcomstancis in which Mr McLendon died are not known to me, but what I do know is that he died in battle. Hopefully you can help me to get in touch with relatives. Already thanks for all the efforts, Pieter lenting. Notify Administrator about this message?
