McLaurin/McLerran-Matthews SC-NC-KY-TX

Alice -

Your May 7, 2000, posting at the Matthews site intrigues me since I, too, have lost a Mary Matthews!

First things first - one branch of my family is rife with McLerrans (etc!!) and Matthews. The McLerrans descend from Duncan McLerran who was born Scotland (est 1740). They proliferated in the Cumberland Co, NC, area, and then my branch removed to TN and KY (actually, simultaneously - apparently there was a survey error and what was once part of TN became KY - or vise versa!) and then eventually Texas. There are, of course, several Johns and Duncans and William and etc.

The Matthews descend from Walter Matthews and Mary Mendenhall, both born abt 1700. Walter and Mary were Quakers from Pennsylvania and settled in the South. Their son, Oliver, eventually removed to Cumberland/Monroe counties, KY, and then many of the Matthews and McLerrans went to Texas at about the same time.

My great grandmother was Dorcas McLerran, born 1848 in Kentucky. Her parents were Bennet McLerran and Elizabeth Mary Matthews. There we numerous McLerran-Matthews marriages.

Dorcas married John L. Redman Jr about 1868 in (I believe) Searcy Co, AR. They had one son, Oscar Redman, and by about 1870 they are back in Texas where John Redman dies and Dorcas remarries to a William Click (no further data). They were married, I think, for possibly ten years so itīs possible they had children.

At any rate, the interesting part of the story is that John L. Redman Jrīs mother was Mary Matthews who, according to census records, was born 1810 in KY.

Family tradition holds that John Jr and Dorcas were first cousins - their parents were either brothers or sisters -either both McLerrans or both Matthews. Since the two males in question have different surnames that leaves the ladies.

This is our missing Mary. Whether she was neé Matthews or McLerran is a mystery. We know that Dorcasī mother was a Matthews - but we can find no available Mary. All the eligible candidates seem to be accounted for.

Now, it could be that the term "cousin" was used in the old sense - not necessarily cousins as we think today.

So, my question is, can you further identify your John McLaurin? -dates, places, parents, whatever?

I will post this as a response to your Matthews query and also at the McLaurin site.

Hope to hear from you.
