Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the story of Donald McClardy, my great great grandfather, who came to Cumberland County, NC from Argyll/Kintyre area prior to 1863. I know he must have left family in Scotland who might have heard this story and passed it on to someone in the family. He married my great great grandmother while in NC and had a son named John Robert McClardy. Somehow he was accused of being a Yankee spy, and decided to go back to Scotland until the Civil War was over and then return to his wife and son in the U.S.
He sailed from Wilmington, NC on the "General Lyon", a steamship that caught fire off Nags Head, NC and he lost his life. It was documented in the New York Times, and is online to view if you perform a google search.
He came to NC as an engineer with his brother to build cotton mills in the South. I feel he must have come from a somewhat prosperous family in Scotland, and surely the family there would have gotten word of his death. Just wondering if anyone with ties to that area of Scotland might have ever heard of him, or if there is some documentation of his life and death in Scotland. I have no idea of any other family names. Any help with this would be very appreciated.
