From the Historical Research Center:"The surname McLarty (and its variants of MacLardie and MacLaverty) is found in Ulster, where it is ultimately of Scottish origin, having been brought to Ireland during the Plantation Period of the 17th century.According to legend, the progrenitor of the Scottish family, from whom the name is derived, was known as 'Fear Labhairt an Righ' or 'the King's Speaker.'He received this distinction from the circumstance of his being employed by the King of the Isles as a special ambassador to hostile tribes who were feuding with that potentate. The office was hereditary in the family. The proper Gaelic form is 'Mac Fhlaithbheartaich' which means 'son of the ruler.' The earliest record of the surname is from 1376 when one John M'Claffirdy was listed as a tenant under the Douglasses in the lands of Mikilbrekanch in the barony of Buibble.John Mac Gillichrist Maklefferdich was one of those included in the remission granted Sir John Campbell of Cawdor and others in 1524..."See also, MacLardy, McLardy, McClarty, McLaverty, etc.
