Trudy, my mother, Dorothy McLarney Rutter, is your first cousin. My grandfather, Edward Francis McLarney, was your Mom's oldest brother. My great-grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth McLarney emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. My grandfather always said he was "born on the boat". We believe they settled in NYC. They had other children after they arrived here. At some point they returned to Ireland taking all their children, except for my grandfather, with them. My grandfather met and married my grandmother, Loretta Bloodgood, while living in NY. They later moved to Jersey City.

My parents used to visit your parents in Brigantine. I remember your Mom talking about going to school in Ireland. She told us that she and her family lived in a town called Cootehill (not sure of spelling) in County Cavan, Ireland. My great-grandparents returned to the U.S. bringing your Mom, her sister Cecilia (Aunt Cis) and her brother Joe with them. Their oldest daughter, Mary, stayed behind. She had gone to attend nursing school in England, and remained there until my grandfather asked her to come to the U.S. to help him care for my grandmother, who had developed a severe heart condition. This was around the early 1960's. I remember my Great-Aunt Mary as a very proper English lady. She told me about the love of her life, her fiance, who had died in the 1st World War. She still had a beautiful silver mirror and hair brush set he had given her.

I remember your mother fondly. Her eyes twinkled like my grandfather's, and she and my Mom looked alot alike. My grandparents had 10 children. My Mom is number 5. I am one of 36 cousins, and some of my cousins' children have married and started families of their own. We have been having McLarney family reunions every 5 years since 1990. Some of my relatives have put together a booklet listing all of us going back to my grandparents, their parents, and their brothers and sisters. If you would like a copy, I would be glad to send one to you.

Unfortunately, we have lost 2 of my mother's sisters and 2 of her sisters-in-law, as well as 2 of my cousins, in the last 3 years. So we may not wait until 1995 to have another reunion. (My aunts and uncles are getting up there now. My mother just turned 82.) We usually try to pick a spot somewhere in South Jersey. We'd love to have you join us at the next reunion. Please let me know if you're interested.
