Hi Peter,
The newsagent connection caught my eye:
My ggf, Thomas McLaren (1821 to 1898), operated a newsagent's business in the Inverness Railway Station and Glasgow in the late 1800s) His daughter, Isabella ( my ggm) and her husband, James Brown (my ggm) also operated newsagent's shops in Inverness, Glasgow and Ayr. They are both buried in Glasgow. I know very little of them as my
ggm died in 1915 and her daughter, Jeannie Brown Welsh (my gm) died in Girvan in 1938. I believe at one time the family may have owned or operated 3 or 4 newsagent's stores
and one of Thomas's daughters and the family has ties to the founding of the Scotsman newspaper. I have noted that the firm of McLaren was the original printer of the Scotsman.
If anything clicks let me know.
Tom Welsh
