I found some more information. I have beeen looking into McClain and its variations (Mclain, McLane, McLean) because my gr-gr-grandfather Benjamin McClain from MO, had a grandfather who came from Maryland.

There is a book called "Pioneers of Old Monocacy - The Early Settlement of Frederick County, Maryland 1721-1743" by Grace L. Tracey and John P. Dern. On page 235 it says that a Micajah Plummer had a tract of land surveyed for him on April 8, 1743 which he called "Plummer's Hunting Lot". It goes on further to say that by 1754 this land was in possession of William McLean. Monocacy, however is on the western side of Maryland and you state that your ancestor came from Somerset Co., that would be on the Eastern Shore, so this might be a bit of a stretch.

On another book "Settlers of Maryland 1679-1783" by Peter Wilson Coldham it states on p. 433:
- John and Katherine Macklane registered a tract of land which they called "Hector's Chance", in Baltimore County on Sep 29, 1730.
- John Mclain (McClain) registered "Maclain's Folly" in Baltimore Co., on 20 Feb 1744, and "Maclain's Hills" also in Baltimore Co. on 07 Sep 1745, then "McClains Addition" in Queen Anne's Co., on 18 Mar 1747. (note the differences in name spelling for the same person as well as the migration from one county to another so it could be the same John as above).
-Wooney McLaney registered "Belfast" in Somerset Co. on 04 May 1688.

In the book "The House of Waltman and its Allied Families" p. 200 there is a section about the immigrant Alan McLane, born in the Island of Cull in Ireland abt. 1719(sounds like an Ulster-Scotch family to me). Arrived in America in 1740 and it seems settled first in Pennsylvania. In 1745 he married Jane Erwin from another Scotch-Irish family. They had four sons: (Col.) Allen, (Maj.) Daniel, (Capt)Samuel McLane and (Esgn) Robert known as "the fighting McLanes" due to their participation in the Revolutionary War. Allen married Rebecca Wells and had a son named Louis McLane who later became Congressman, Senator, Secretary of the Treasury and President of the First American Railroad. Louis's son Robert Milligan was also Congressman, Governor of Maryland, Commissioner to China and Minister to both France and Mexico.

From the above you can see that at least one of the brothers at some point went to Maryland after the war, but it does not specify where.

You might try birth and marriage records (both county and church) as well as census to see if your ancestor might hook up to one of these early McLanes.

Good luck!
