Charles McLain 1854 -1930 in Maine (?) / Colorado

I am trying to find more information about my McLain connections. I have census records for Las Animas, Colorado 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. I can find nothing before that time.

My great grandmother was Alta Mclain Swank. Her father was Charles McLain b.Oct. 1854. His 1900 census lists his birth place as Maine (his parents also) and his marriage to Fannie (Sarah Francis)in 1882. Fannie lists her place of birth as New York in the 1900 census but in the 1910 census she lists Illinois.

Children born to Charles and Fannie: Albert W, Alta G, Helen S., Merrit C., Anna D., and George W.

Census records are from Las Animas, Colorado. My mother remembers that after Charles death Fannie lived in Alamosa, Colorado.

According to an aunt, oral history says the the McLains came from Scotland to Nova Scotia and then to Maine or New York.

My mother's memory is fading due to a stroke and her family is disconnected and scattered. Any help would be appreciated.
