I know that the family was basically started on the Isle of Mull by Lachlan and Hector and that Hector started his branch of the family at Lochbuie in the 1300s (Lachlan at Duart). But...the spelling for both families ended in "ean" until the 1700s when the Lochbuie clan changed their spelling to "ain". That is my understanding, anyway. My question is...am I right in my understanding that since my last name is McLain I can be certain that I am of the lineage of Hector of Lochbuie? Or are the spellings so intertwined that unless you know your entire family tree you can't be certain if your ancestral home is that at Lochbuie or that at Duart?
I ask because I am visiting Mull in a couple of weeks and I would like to know. I may just have to find out the real answer while I'm there...afterall...if anyone should know it would be the McLean's and McLain's that live there.
