There are McKnights in the Miramichi, NB area that came from Annan, in the southwestern corner of Scotland, not far from Gretna Green. Three brothers came over at the same time, in the 1800s, and landed at Chatham and eventually obtained land south of the Miramichi.

There was a lot of immigration between Ireland and that part of Scotland once upon a time, so it's likely that the families have connections with both countries.

Not sure if this is even remotely useful to you, but Sussex and Miramichi aren't that far apart.
