About a year and a half ago, I had posted the following concerning Robert and Daniel McKissick of Lincoln Co., NC and would like to follow-up with the fact that I would like to find some direct male line descendants of this family who would like to join our DNA Project. For more informationon the testing, please visit www.familytreedna.com. The testing would be free to those who can prove their lineage back to Daniel and/or Robert McKissick...this would further aid in research for the McKissick lineage further back where written records are not available. Please contact me directly and here is my prior post concerning this McKissick family: "Hello McKissick Researchers: I am currently researching my COLLETT family and have found a couple of references to indicate that my family lived and had some interaction (direct and indirect) with the McKissick family of Lincoln/Mecklenburg Co., NC. The first reference is: "Feb. 15, 1783, William Thompson & wf. Sarah of Lincoln Co., to Henry Thompson of same, for 120 proc. money...land on N. Side of Mountain Creek, adj. Robt McKissick, 157 A conveyed by Abraham Collett to Henry Thompson Sr 5 & 6 Jan 1765 & by his L.W. & T. of sd. William on 22 May 1777...William Thompson (seal), Sarah Thompson (s) (seal), wit: Robert McCusicke, Saml Thompson. Rec. July term 1783." The land mentioned was originally surveyed and granted to Abraham Collett: "2 December 1760 Abraham Collett surveyed 700 acres on both sides of Mountain Creek on the west side of the Catawba River. Title was granted 4 April 1761 (Rowan County Deed Book 4, p.529)." At the time of the sale to Henry Thompson, Abraham Collett was living in Rowan Co., NC and Henry Thompson was mentioned as being from Mecklenburg Co., NC. (which was formed from Anson Co. in 1762)...this area likely later became Tryon Co. in 1769 and Lincoln Co. in 1779. At any rate, Robert McKissick was listed as living next to the Thompson family in 1783 Lincoln Co. and also listed as a witness, along with Samuel Thompson. I speculate that Robert McKissick may have had family ties, or just been a close neighbor with this Thompson family. From my initial searches on the Internet, I believe that Daniel McKissick is listed as a son of Robert McKissick. The Collett family acquired land in 1767 Mecklenburg Co., NC and later purchased land in Rowan County in 1771 (portion that later became Burke County in 1777). My ancestor, William Collett, was found in a 1783 Burke Co., NC court record, turning in a Rev. War pay voucher in 1785 at the Rutherford Co., NC courthouse, in the 1790 Burke Co., NC census, and in 1792, he accepted payment for a pay voucher of Daniel McKissick: "Abstract of the Settlement of Army Accounts at Hillsborough in 1792. Name of the Claimant: WilliamCollett. Amount: 27 8 4 Whom Accepted for: Daniel McKissick "The foregoing Sums were the whole Amount of the Accounts, one-fourth of which were paid either in Cash or Due-Bills, and the other Three-fourths in certificates. J. Craven, Comptroller." From my understanding, pay vouchers could be traded or exchanged and often this was done. From the citation above, Daniel McKissick evidently exchanged something for his Rev. War pay voucher of 1792 w/William Collett. William Collett also served in the Continental Army (at least 2 separate enlistments) and he also had pay vouchers in his own name. However, by accepting payment for Daniel McKissick's voucher, this seems to indicate that the two had some dealings and a possible relationship. With the McKissick name turning up in 2 earlier records, it has caused me to take a closer look at this family. The information that I have been able to locate has been extremely limited. I did find the following on Daniel (http://www.burkesheriff.org/pastsheriffs.htm): (1) Daniel McKissick (1777 to 1779) Not a resident of present Burke County, however lived in the south-central section of present Catawba County near the town of Maiden Gunsmith by trade Married Jane Wilson (b. 1759 - d. 1844) in 1776 Captain in the Revolutionary War Commanded a company of N.C. Dragoons Severely wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Ramsour's Mill on June 20, 1780 Died in 1818 in Shelbyville, Tennessee If anyone has any additional information on Daniel and Robert McKissick from the Lincoln Co.--formerly Tryon 1769-1778--formerly Mecklenburg 1762-1768, please get in contact with me. Thanks! Sincerely, Barry Collett PS In reading some old postings on Daniel McKissick, I saw some possible confusion among researchers in that there were apparently records of Daniel McKissick in Buncombe Co., NC. My own ancestor, William Collett, seemed to leave sporadic records in neighboring counties...a brief timeline for William in North Carolina, beforing moving to Knox Co., KY by 1802 is as follows: William Collett served in the North Carolina Continental Army of the Revolutionary War from November 10, 1778 until August 10, 1779. He was born by 1762, as you had to be 16 years of age to enlist in the American Revolution. In 1781, William Collett was on a list of paroled NC militia. William was listed as being from Burke Co., NC and was paroled by Lord Cornwallis; it is believed that these militiamen were captured during the events surrounding the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in NC on 15 March 1781. In 1783, the Sheriff of Burke Co., NC was instructed on the third Monday of June to hold William Collett until the third Monday in July to answer for John Russell’s pleas of trespass. In 1783, William Collett was listed as eligible for a pay voucher for his service in the Revolutionary War. In 1784, William cashed in his pay voucher out of Morgan District (Rutherford, Burke, Lincoln, or Wilkes County, NC). In 1785, the Hillsborough Dist. Treasury Office received the currency certificate from the Rutherford County office for William Collett In 1790, William Collett appeared on the Burke Co., NC (Morgan District) census in the First Company. In 1792, another act was passed for payment to Revolutionary War soldiers. The State of NC was indebted to William Collett. Apparently, William did not collect upon this. In 1792, William Collett was the claimant and accepted payment for Daniel McKissick’s pay voucher. In 1798, William Collett was listed as a tax delinquent in Buncombe Co., NC. Apparently, he was living in Buncombe until 1797 and moved on by 1798." Sincerely, Barry Collett Notify Administrator about this message?
