Information is scarce regarding the Elders but here is what I have:
I found John, farmer with 12,000 acres & Esther Elder listed in Coshocton Co. Jefferson Township in Ohio 1850 Census with children: William, age 22, Eleanor 17, Sabina 15, Cyrus 14, Thomas 12, Alexander 11, Peggy 9, Sarah 7 & Josephine 5. 12 Aug 1850 page 163 reel 620
This Alexander's age in 1850 would correspond with the age (80)given on Alexander Elder's California death certificate in 1918.
A. Craig Elder agrees that John and Esther (McConnell) Elder are the parents of the Alexander Elder who married Mary McKissick. (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=tednopal&id=I18188)
