The date and place of birth of William McKinster has not been proven. He is belived to be of Scotch-Irish descent which means he could have been born in Ireland, Scotland, or even the USA, since the last big Scotch-Irish migration from Ulster was about 1775. Being in training as a Catholic priest has not been proven either and is just a family legend at this point.
The first record that we have of William McKinster is his marriage record in Greenbrier Co., VA. On 23 Dec 1790, William McGinstery and Elisabeth Hail were married by Rev. John Alderson. William then shows up in Greenbrier Co., VA tax and court records until 1798. After that date he shows up in records in Russell and Tazewell Co., VA until 1806. In the 1820 census of Tazewell Co., Elizabeth shows up as head of household.
The list of children shown here for William and Elizabeth may be from two different families. In the 1820 census of Tazewell Co., there are two McKinster households. One is headed by Elizabeth with four female children. The other is headed by Nancy McKinster with one male and three female children. We know that Ambrose and William (brothers) had already gone to Lawrence Co., KY in 1820. Also we have marriage records in Tazewell Co., for a Jane McKinster that married Mastin Christian in 1822 and Cathan McKinster that married John Christian in 1823. So we are not exactly sure who all these children belonged to.
I would be very glad to share documented information with anyone about these early Virginia McKinsters.
