I am looking for information about ROLLY MCKENZIE of Madison Co. and Pulaski Co. Kentucky and ROLIN MCKENZIE of Washington Co. Illinois. I would also like to find a MCKENZIE descendant of ROLLY of Madison Co. Kentucky for the MACKENZIE DNA testing project.

I would like to know if the ROLLY MCKENZIE mentioned in Madison Kentucky is connected to a ROLIN/ROWLIN MCKENZIE in Washington Co. Illinois in the 1830's.
The Washigton Co. Illinois ROLIN MCKENZIE is the oldest MCKENZIE found in records of my own MCKENZIE family in Illinois. I do not know his exact relationship to my family as he is not mentioned in family bibles or lore.
DNA Testing is now being conducted on two members of my family from distant MCKENZIE lines. If descendants of the Madison Co. Kentucky MCKENZIES - bearing the surname MCKENZIE (of any spelling) - could be found - DNA testing might prove their connection.
ROLIN MCKENZIE is listed in the 1830 census of Washington Co. Illinois living next to my own direct ancestor STEPHEN MCKENZIE, b. 1780 TN. ROLIN is between 70 and 80 years old during the 1830 census. A female also of the same age is living with ROLIN. This makes their dates of birth between 1750 and 1760.
ROWLIN MCKINZIE is mentioned in the Feb. 12, 1838 probate of DAVID MCKINZIE. He is not found on the 1840 census, so I think that he might have died between Feb. 12, 1838 and the 1840 census. No burial place has been found for this ROLIN/ROWLIN MCKENZIE. But even the headstones for the next generation of MCKENZIES in Ashley, Washington Co. Illinois are very small.

"Know all men by these presents that we DEBORAH MCKINZIE, BANICH (sp?)AUSTIN and ROWLIN MCKINZIE of the County of Washington and State of Illinois are held and firmly bound, unto the People of the State of Illinois in the penal sum of one hundred and fifty dollars current money of the United States. Which payment well and truly to be made and performed, we and each of us bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, jointly, severally, and firmly by these presents, (?) our hands and seals this twelth day of February A.D. 1838."
DAVID MCKINZIE (MCKENZIE)was born between 1795 and 1802. He married NANCY MCCARDEL December 02, 1819, in Alexander Co. Illinois. I don't know what happened to this marriage as another marriage license was issued to DAVID the next summer. I don't think there were two separate DAVIDS.
There was a license to marry issued to DAVID MCKENZIE and DEBORAH AUSTIN on July 26, 1820 in Alexander Co. Illinois. I have found no evidence of the marriage - just the license.
But DEBORAH is mentioned in DAVID'S probate along with BANICH AUSTIN - whom I think might be her brother - so I believe that a marriage did take place between DAVID and DEBORAH AUSTIN.
Early Alexander Co. Illinois records suffered the fate of fires on two separate occasions. So my attempts to locate records have been incomplete.
The names of ALLEN MCKINSEY, STEPHEN MCKINSEY, DAVID MCKINSEY and CALVIN MCKINSEY or (MCKENZIE) were found in the records of Alexander, Pulaski and Union Counties in Illinois between 1807 and 1822. ALLEN MCKENZIE was the most prominent person of this group in owning land and participating in civic duties. ALLEN also owned a ferry across the Mississippi River. I do not know the exact realtionships of these men. I think that ALLEN, STEPHEN and DAVID might be brothers and that CALVIN might be a child of ALLEN - but no proof.
The name of ROLIN MCKENZIE does not surface with these men until the 1830 census in Washington Co. Illinois where many of the MCKENZIES moved to in 1822. Some remained in Alexander Co. Illinois for a time. I think that the New Madrid earthquakes might have prompted their move north.
There is a ROLAND MCKENZIE, born about 1828, probably in Washington Co. Illinois, believed to be a son of STEPHEN MCKENZIE, b. 1780 and TRYPHENA AUSTIN. (This is the same STEPHEN MCKENZIE mentioned in the early records of Alexander Co. Illinois along with ALLEN, CALVIN and DAVID.) This younger ROLAND married Louisa J. Locke in Washington Co. Illinois. The existance of this ROLAND MCKENZIE shows a connection of the name ROLIN/ROWLIN to our family.
STEPHEN MCKENZIE is the earliest confirmed ancestor, born 1780 somewhere in Tennessee according to his census records, that exists for my family. No bible for the family of STEPHEN MCKENZIE exists. However, a bible for a subsequent generation lists STEPHEN and TRYPHENA. I believe that TRYPHENA AUSTIN is the sister of DEBORAH AUSTIN who married DAVID MCKENZIE. I have no proof of this belief, and also have never found a marriage record for STEPHEN and TRYPHENA.
Most of my early MCKENZIES are buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Ashley, Washington Co. Illinois.
No family stories exist today about our MCKENZIE'S migration to the Colonies or their travels to Illinois. My MCKENZIES brought their families to Tennessee by 1780 when this area was the frontier of America. My MCKENZIES arrived in Illinois prior to the time that land ownership by Americans was legal. Illinois was the new frontier. Bear and other game were everywhere and forests covered the land. Simple log cabins were their homes. My MCKENZIES were farmers in the early days in Illinois. They helped to build roads and ferrys and served on juries and were members of local militias. These were men accustomed to hard work and involvement with their community. They moved north to Washington Co. Illinois around 1822 to escape the devestating effects of the 1811/12 New Madrid Earthquakes. The epicenter of the quakes was not more than 50 miles from their homes at the very southern tip of Illinois. In the 1860's the men fought on the side of the Union in the Civil War. Later generations worked the mines or the railroads in Illinois. They loved their work and they loved to sing. Current generations are spread around the United States, with only a handful remaining in Illinois. Most -- sadly -- have lost contact.
