MacKenzie surname yDNA Project begins

Males bearing the surname McKenzie through birth --- in any of its various spellings - MacKenzie-McKenzie-McKinzie-McKinsey-McKinney-Kinney-Kinzie --- are encouraged to participate in the new yDNA Project. This is a world-wide project and not limited to any specific McKenzie line or any specific country - all are welcomed as they all lead back to the Scottish Highlands!

yDNA, used to establish surname descendency, passes from father to son only. Female McKenzies need to locate a close McKenzie-surnamed relative and have their yDNA tested for this project.

We anticipate that multiple lines of McKenzies will be identified through this process. This testing will be especially important for those of us whose ancestors left the Highlands for new lands several hundred years ago.

The paper trail that each of you have established for your ancestors will provide the base for the genetic comparisons.

In my own specific case I can trace my McKenzies back 6 generations to an unidentified location in Tennessee in 1780. They arrived in Alexander County, Illinois by 1807 and two McKenzies married Austin women. My McKenzie ancestors were in Washington County, Illinois by 1822. I can get no further back than 1780 due to the lack of a paper trail.

However, through this yDNA testing I may find that I am genetically related to another McKenzie line that can place themselves on the east coast of America prior to my earliest date of 1780. And maybe I will find that I am genetically connected to a line that can place itself in Scotland.

This project is in its beginning stages. The link above will connect you to the project website. Limited information is on the website at this time, but more will follow as the project progresses.

There are several variations of yDNA test kits available through this company. Kits with more markers will provide more genetic identifiers and give more specific test results. If you choose a lower marker test at this time, you can upgrade to a higher marker test in the future if the need arises.

You can also follow the progress on the Clan MacKenzie list.
