Hi, Linda.
I think what bothers me is that although Gregor McKinnon's family has been known for some time, and there have been several persons who have taken an interest in it; no one seems to have done the basic work. At least I would think that a part of the basis work would have been an examination of the 1851 census of Glenelg Parish, Northumberland Co., NB. This gives Hugh McKinnon's family:

McKinnon Hugh M Head 58 Scotch Farmer Birth
McKinnon Jane F Wife 43 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Margaret F Daughter 20 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Sarah F Daughter 15 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Grigor M Son 13 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Catharine F Daughter 10 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Robert M Son 8 Scotch Birth
McKinnon William M Son 6 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Ann F Daughter 4 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Bona F Daughter 7 m Scotch Birth

plus very near by (assuming the enumerator went from one house to the next):

McDonald John M Head 37 Scotch Farmer (Prop) Birth
McDonald Margaret F Wife 28 Scotch Birth
McDonald Francis M Son 9 Scotch Birth
McDonald Ann F Daughter 7 Scotch Birth
McDonald Karin F Daughter 5 Scotch Birth
McDonald Alexander M Son 3 Scotch Birth
McKinnon Jane F Cousin 18 Scotch Birth

So far as I know, these were the only McKinnon's in Glenelg Parish in 1851. The assumption follows that Jane was Hugh's daughter. You mentioned 9 children, but not including Jane. Which of the (now 10) children was not included? I have a Joseph McKinnon who m. 1839; far too early to have been Hugh's son; and I believe he is sometimes given as such.
That Jane was a cousin to either John or Margaret McDonald suggests, at that time, that one of her parents was a sibling to one of their parents. There are other interpretations, but that is the simplest to begin with. I looked at the McDonald's, and after two days realized that John McDonald was unlikely to be Jane McKinnon's cousin, However, when I looked at Margaret it became clear that she must be Jane's cousin. The first step is the marriage:

John McDonald at Point aux Car, by A. Goodfellow, Esq. 6JAN1840 to Margaret Russell, eldest d/o F. Russell, all of Glenelg Parish.

In other words the John and Margaret in 1851, m. ca. 1841, with a son, Francis, apparently named after her father, Francis Russell. Francis Russell m. 4FEB1813 Ann Forsyth (b. ca. 1793), d/o Robert and Jane (Martin) Forsyth.
Hugh McKinnon is though to have m. Jane Forsyth; but there appears to be a great deal of doubt about this. Jane Forsyth is not even included in Forsyth genealogies. I find it very difficult to suppose that Francis Russell was Jane's uncle and the brother of her mother. On the other hand, there is every reason to believe that the mother of Jane McKinnon(accepting her as Hugh's daughter) was the sister of the mother of Margaret (Russell) McDonald. That Jane was Margaret's cousin shows she must be Hugh's daughter and that her mother was Jane Forsyth. Jane McKinnon's aunt, Margaret McKinnon, did m. Robert Forsyth (brother to the mothers of Jane and Margaret); but that still only makes makes them actually cousins if their mothers are sisters. The concept of cousin-in-law seems a bit too intricate and seems unnecessary.

Since the McKinnon's do not come into my ancestry until my great granmother, I have not looked at them closely. Recently I have done so, and have noted much that is missing, and some items of interest. For example, my connection is through a Haines-McKinnon marriage in Richibucto. There has been some question as to whether the McKinnon family was the same as Gregor's; but I find a similar connection between the two families (somewhat difficult to notice), showing that the Haines' had every opportunity to know members of Gregor's family.

Thomas
