Looking for any type of information for William McKinnon d Apr 13 1811 Sydney Cape Breton. His headstone reads "In Memory to the Honourable William McKinnon Late Secretary Registrar & Clerk of Council for the Island of Cape Breton"; he buried in St Georges Sydney. Another site lists him as follows - "William McKinnon of Carolina born Scotland; Cape Breton Loyalist; Esquire, Land Grants Secretary & Registrar; Secretary & Register of Deeds; Secretary Register & Clerk of the council 1792-1793".
William McKinnon had two sons the eldest sons name is unknown, just that he was under orders to join his corps in Canada (this is during the War of 1812 the provinces were still seperate colonies; Canada would refer to Ontario/Quebec). No daughters are mentioned.
His other son William makes a petition for land in 1816 to be able to support his mother and himself; as they are dependent on the older son; and he is leaving. He receives a 500 acre parcel 7 miles east of St Peters on the eastern side of the Bras D'Or Lake. Can anyone tell me if this WIlliam McKinnon is the William McKinnon married to Mary Gillis, sister of Alexander Gillis in the 1830s in the Georges River area of Cape Breton. These McKinnons were Presbyterian. We have always wondered why these McKinnons were not related to any other McKinnons on the island.
Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you.
