John McKinnon was born c. 1818 in Lochiel township, Glengarry. His father Donald McKinnon, mother Mary McDonald. According the the 1838 Caledonia Township Assessment rolls, the parents were born in Scotland. Sometime after the death of Donald c 1838, the family returned to Lochiel. John had a brother named Roderick who married Marguerite McPhee, 8 Jan 1844 in St Finnans, Lochiel. John married Angélique Lalonde 22 Feb, 1841 in St Jean Baptiste de L'Orignal.
