After going through so many census' I feel the person taking the census from the family was really just sounding out and maybe felt there should be 1 or 2 s' or maybe you have to remember that alot of people could not read or write so they would forget how to spell their name. My McKinnis is McKiness. During my ggrandfather lifetime he spelled it several different ways on legal documents. He spelled it McKinnez on his marriage license.
