Cheryl,
Your statement regarding Mac names being Scottish and Mc names being Irish is not accurate. There are Mac names in Ireland as well as Mc names in Scotland.Mc and M' are both just abbreviations of Mac.All meaning "son of".As for the tartan, If the individuals do not already know the origin of their McKinneys, a possibility is that they are from Clan MacKenzie.MacKenney and McKinney are considered spelling variations of the clan name. The "z" was not originally included in the pronunciation of MacKenzie so you can see how it would sound similar.I know all this because I am a member of the clan MacKenzie based on my McKinney ancestry.
Troy.
