There is good reason to be confused about early Kentucky McKinney research!! There has been so much bad genealogy associated with the various families that the story is nearly hopelessly muddled. The only thing to do is to try to find documents that support the line of ancestry/descendancy.
Two brothers John Watson McKinney and William King McKinney married two sisters. John m. Rebecca Pittman and William m. Sarena/Cyrena/Cyrenia Pittman.
The 1850 Russell County, Kentucky census shows this for your John & Rebecca:
381/381
John McKinny / 39 yo b. KY / Bpt. Clergyman / $215
Rebecca McKinny / 39 yo b. KY
Silas G. McKinny / 16 yo b. KY
Balas L. McKinny / 14 yo b. KY
Mary E. McKinny / 13 yo b. KY
Sarena McKinny / 11 yo b. KY
George F. McKinny / 9 yo b. KY
Sarah McKinny / 7 yo b. KY
John B. McKinny / 5 yo b. KY
William McKinny / 3 yo b. KY
1880 Monroe Township, Pike County, Indiana found John & Rebecca elderly and living with their son, Josiah. Notice in that census where each of them reported their parents having been born!!
269/274
Josiah W. McKiney / - / 25 yo b. KY / father b. KY / mother b. NC / farmer
Joanah McKiney / wife / 22 yo b. Ind / parents b. Ind
Bertha E. McKiney / dau / 4 yo b. Ind
William N. McKiney / son / 2 yo b. Ind
Silly [Sally?] J. McKiney / dau / 10/12th yo b. Ind
John W. McKiney, sr. / father / b. KY / father b. VA / mother b. GA / retired farmer
Rebecca McKiney / mother / b. NC / father b. NC / mother b. PA / dyspepsia
If you take a look at www.mckinneymaze.com / Winter 1982 issue you will find that a researcher reported that John Watson McKinney's father was William and his grandfather was Liam McKinney. "The McKinney Maze" is not primary evidence but it is a beginning . . . . there is NO evidence at this time that John Watson McKinney was related to the Mordecai McKinney line!!
