I would like to chime in on this discussion as well. While you acknowledge that lineage tracing via the Y Chromoshome is not being disputed, and you are correct it would be most helpful if we could dig up our ancestors and get their DNA would remove any doubt as to who decends from who. You cannot ignore that when used in conjunction with known, GOOD documented genealogy, such as the case of the Mordecai Grouping in the McKinney yDNA project where one member has about as good of a documentation back to Daniel, son of Mordecai as one could ask for, that the science and geneology can work together. I, as a member of that study group believe that it has been a most successful TOOL in documenting my family history and that the science isn't bad but that some people who have lived along time believing that they decend from someone can become quite upset when they find out that genetically they could not have come from that person at all. For the longest time almost every McKinney in Texas claimed to be related to the famous Collin including my family til I proved other wise also alot of McKinneys claim to be decended from the McKinney who died in the Alamo which is also not correct because he didn't have any children. Use the DNA study as a tool to validate your documentation and you can't go wrong.
