I would like to just take a moment to speak about this DNA project. As a person with a degree in biology from Indiana University, I feel that some clarificaiton is needed when it comes to using DNA in geneology. It is true that one can trace lineage through the Y chromosome, however all it can only prove or refute the relationship between those who are tested.
With that said, Mordecai, Daniel, Collin and even James the Quaker have never been tested. This means that we do not have their DNA for comparison. This means that we can't say which group of people are related to these people. The conclusion of lineage that is being made by the McKinney DNA project is based on bad science (not that the science is bad, but the conclusions drawn by the science are bad). And then again it could just be people misrepresenting the conclusions. Conclusions are being made based on papertrails that have yet to be proven.By admission of many researchers there is no conscensus about who is or isn't related to Mordecai or Daniel or any other of the unknown number of people who became "McKinney".Without this consensus we are left with useless information.
Until we can locate the bodies of these original descendants, exhume them and then test their y-dna we will never know which one of these test groups are or are not related to mordecai or the others.
I don't disagree with the theory of DNA testing, or the possiblity that it could become a useful genology tool in the future. But, I do want to caution people to be careful of their emphatic conclusions, lest we create a jumbled mess of assumptions and erronious conclusions that will hinder our descendants the way the paper trails, family histories, and propigated errors has confused us.
